Where the French Fries are Crispy and Dreams Come True!

Minnesota State Fair and Lots of Fried Food

Posted by French Fry Fairy On August - 31 - 2012ADD COMMENTS

As luck would have it, I planned my summer trip to Minnesota during the time of the Minnesota State Fair. Like all other Minnesota State Fair visitors, Jason, my mother and I planned an entire day of gorging ourselves on anything fried and loaded with sugar. I skipped breakfast that morning in order to build up my hunger to unparalleled levels so I could take on the Minnesota State Fair challenge. There are no real rules to the challenge other than discovering just how much food you can stuff into your belly. There are any real winners with this challenge. Although the pleasure from eating the food is mind-blowing, it’s fleeting and everyone ends up leaving the fair feeling fat, tired and stuffed. We were not any different, but it was totally worth every carb-laden calorie. I welcome you to join me on this photographic journey of why America is fat…

There were so many people at the State Fair on a weekday. It made me wonder if people had jobs or if they all took the day off work to be here.
Just one more picture of just how massive the “Great Minnesota Get-Together” is and just how many people were in attendance. Jason is from South Florida, so I think his exact words were, “I have never seen so many white people in one place. This must be where they all come from.” Lol…
I sincerely doubt this is an authentic Australian dish, but you really can’t go wrong with battered, deep fried potatoes. Om nom nom nom…
I was wrong… this must be an authentic Australian dish. Please take note of the flag posted on my calorie-laden plate of fried potatoes. These were absolutely amazing. There was also an option to slather the potatoes in ranch dressing, but I went with this option. Very yummy in my tummy.
I was told that skipping the Corn Roast stand was just downright un-American. I didn’t want to be accused of that. Besides, it sounded delicious.
The corn was delicious. My mom and I were big fans. It was also the the healthiest thing we ate all day.
Our next adventure was taking on the Hot Apple Dumpling Booth while we watched the parade. My mom suggested it and I thought, “What the heck… apple dumplings an the state fair go together like cats and old ladies.”
We chose to get the ice cream on the side since lactose intolerance runs in the family. Even without the ice cream, this delectable dish put on a little party in mouth. I would attend that party again.
Here is the ice cream from the apple dumplings. Jason said the ice cream and apple combination was good. He is not a man of many words, so what he really meant was, “Oh my goodness… this apple dumpling and ice cream combination is so divine, scrumptious and tasty. I only wish that I could have grown up in Minnesota instead of South Florida so I could have enjoyed it throughout my childhood.” Or something like that…
Next, we stopped to get some poutine. This is a Canadian dish that loads gravy and cheese curds on top of French fries. It’s just as good as it sounds.
Poutine in all of it’s glory.
We stopped here to get some French fries. After all, I am the French Fry Fairy. However, I had some competition. They had fry fairies at this booth in fairy costumes spinning a contest wheel. After the jealousy ceased, I realized there was room in this world for lots of French Fry Fairies. A world with French fry lovers is a perfect world for me. Oh, the French fries were amazing too… They were fresh-cut, hot, salted and awesome.
It might surprise you, but we tried more than one batch of fries. The French fries at this booth were also amazing. They were fresh-cut, crispy, hot and seasoned to perfection. I smiled on the inside and outside when eating them…

Fort Lauderdale: Sweet Bananas Grill Yucca Fries Review

Sweet Bananas Grill

So I was in an adventurous mood and ready to try something different. Lucky for me, a bright awning caught my attention while driving along North Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. I decided to stop at Sweet Bananas Grill and give it a whirl. The sign said, “Fresh. Latin. Fast.” and that sounded perfect to me.

You can’t go wrong with fried tubers!

We walked inside and I was thrilled when I found fried yucca on the menu. I feel like the side dish is really the Latin version of French fries. My motto is, “You can’t go wrong with fried tubers!”

I got some mojo sauce on the side and I was in heaven. As I have mentioned in earlier posts, I am from the Midwest, so mojo sauce was a new thing to me when I moved down to Miami. The Midwest is great for casseroles and comfort food (think fried butter at the State Fair), but the world has many awesome flavors and mojo sauce is near the top of my list of favorites.

Fried Yucca

The yucca fries were good. I have been to restaurants where they don’t fry the yucca thoroughly, which makes the side dish inedible. However, that wasn’t the case at Sweet Bananas Grill. They had been sitting out for a few minutes, so they weren’t really hot, but hot enough to still enjoy them. I also ordered a colado, which is like liquid energy. I left with a caffeine buzz and a tummy full of goodness.

The restaurant is a little far from my house, so I don’t know how often I will return. However, if I am ever in the area, it is a great place to stop for lunch or dinner. It was fast, inexpensive, the employees were friendly and overall it was pretty darn good. Oh, and I love the name.

Portobello Mushroom Burger

One of my favorite restaurants in Fort Lauderdale is Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill. It’s a family-owned joint that is most well-known for its burgers. I am not a fan of burgers, but the Burger Beastwill also tell you that this is a place you have to try.

Sweet Potato Fries

After a long, grueling day of riding waterslides at a water park, my friends and I headed over to Gilbert’s to put some much needed calories in our bellies. The boys ordered wings and an assortment of burgers. I ordered the Portobello mushroom burger and some sweet potato fries. The boys ordered some regular French fries, so I got a chance to enjoy those delectable fried tubers as well.

The French fries at Gilbert’s are amazingly delicious. They are fresh-cut, fried twice and served with a sprinkling of salt and pepper. The sweet potato fries are also seasoned with salt and pepper, but the real winning attribute of the fries is the crispiness. There are few things worse than soggy sweet potato fries, so the unfailing crispiness of Gilbert’s fries always makes me smile. Read the rest of this entry »

New York City: Alice’s Tea Cup

I arrived in New York to visit one of my dearest friends, Tania. We headed over to Alice’s Tea Cup for lunch. For me, it was paradise. The restaurant is a whimsical tea room that gave me a magical feel the minute I stepped inside.

There are many healthy options on the menu. Ok, there are mostly healthy options on the menu. Luckily, I found French fries!

I felt like this treasure of restaurant was created just for girls like me. They have so many teas to choose from and the tea cups are so eclectic that you never know what you are going to get. There is everything there to create the perfect tea party! They have adorable little desserts, yummy food and fairy outfits on the wall. Seriously? I can’t sing the praises of this restaurant enough. I was in love.

The French fries were just so-so, but I didn’t even care. Everything else in this restaurant was perfect.

South Beach Food Review: Books and Books & Sweet Potato Fries

Posted by French Fry Fairy On July - 20 - 2012ADD COMMENTS

Frat Boys

Yesterday was the perfect hot and humid Miami summer day. My two buddies, or the frat boys as I like to call them, went to Books and Books to grab some food. My favorite non-fried meal at Books and Books is the vegan platter because it’s so delicious, colorful and filling. But the real star at Books in Books in South Beach is the French fries. They have sweet potato fries, regular French fries and yucca fries.

The yucca fries are delicious, but the dipping sauce that comes on the side is what makes the fried tuber a regular part of my lunch at this particular restaurant. I ordered those along with the vegan platter because I really needed the extra calories. Josh ordered the sweet potato fries, but he soon realized that what’s his is mine.

Sweet potato fries

I snatched the fries off his plate faster than he can slam at beer at Irish Kevin’s in Key West. (For the record, that is 3.56 seconds. I have video proof.) Matty soon joined in on the fun and soon we were singing the sweet potato fries’ praises. What I

Vegan Platter

particularly like about the sweet potato fries is that they are crunchy. Many restaurants serve soggy sweet potato fries, but not Books and Books. No siree! They are crispy on the outside and hot and tasty in the middle. Just like I like them… Thank you Books and Books for consistently being one of my favorite French fry places in South Beach.

Deerfield Beach: Barracuda Bar and Seafood

Barracuda French Fries

It has been quite a while since my last post. I feel that I have done the world a disservice by not sharing my true love and passion for French fries. So, get ready. The French Fry Fairy is coming back to life to bring you all sorts of new French Fry reviews!

My welcome back review will be dedicated to Barracuda Bar and Seafood in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Two of my friends absolutely love this little restaurant, so we dine here frequently. The restaurant has a variety of meals for meat and seafood lovers. The restaurant is owned by Brazilians, so the South American inspiration is divine. I just gave the French fries a whirl… And then, I gave the yucca fries a whirl too!

The French fries were coated in something delicious, which gave them an extra crunch. They came out fried to perfection, so I was happy. The yucca fries were good as well. There are very few yucca fries, or fried yucca, that I actually like. Most restaurants do not fry the yucca long enough, so it always has an uncooked, almost raw taste. However, the chef  fried the yucca thoroughly and my taste buds thanked them.

Fried Yucca

In addition to the fries, I tried a Caipirinha, which is Brazil’s national drink. I definitely think I enjoyed the adult beverage as much as the fries!

Fort Lauderdale Reviews: Tap 42 French Fries

TAp 42 French Fries

Tap 42 is a relatively new little hangout in Fort Lauderdale. I have been there a few times now and I have to say, I hear this place. The service is always a little slow, but the beer menu definitely makes up for it. I can think of very few things that are more appealing than a frosty beverage and fried potatoes. Oh mans… my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

So, not surprisingly, I ordered the French fries. There were not too many more options for me because I don’t eat meat, but you can’t go wrong with fries. They came out salty and seasoned. The parsley not only added some flavor, but the green specs also made the fries particularly pretty. Who doesn’t love pretty fries? Not I said the fly… Oh, and did I mention the French fries came in a bucket? The bucket made them taste better and that’s a fact. The fries were crispy and they made me smile on the inside and outside.

I have one more reason to love Tap 42 and this is why:

“Sustainable” Mission Statement: TAP42 tries our best to bring our guests product that will have a minimal Impact on our ecosystems. We try our best to purchase only sustainable, organic meats and seafood. Help our community and buy local when possible.

French Fries Loaded with Cheese at Grande Pizza in Boca Raton

Cheese + French Fries = Super Yummy Lunch

I went to Grande Pizza with one of my favorite people in the entire world because he said I have to try the French fries with cheese. I drove up to Boca Raton to meet him at the award winning pizza joint and eagerly awaited the arrival of my cheesy French fries.

When they arrived, they looked as delicious as they tasted. I added some extra parmesan cheese to them even though there was already more cheese than I expected blanketing the fries. I took one bite and I was in love. The French fries were not crispy, which is something I typically look for, but they were loaded with cheese and that makes everything good!

There were so many fries even I couldn’t polish off the plate, so my friend had to help. He was lucky I was willing to share… they were divine.

City Hall Restaurant in Miami and Tri-Color French Fries

Posted by French Fry Fairy On September - 1 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

City Hall Tri-Color French Fries

City Hall is a Brasserie-style restaurant in Miami that has a very eclectic menu to please all. My friends and I headed there on Saturday afternoon for lunch and laughs. We were lucky enough to dine at the restaurant on the day it was hosting its very first wedding reception. The atmosphere was fun, celebratory and I think I might have been smiling the entire time.

When it came time to order food, I ordered a side salad and a side of tri-color French fries. That’s right, the French fries were just as colorful as the restaurant’s atmosphere. The fries arrived in a basket, which was an amazing surprise. Not only were there three colors of potatoes, but the fries, which were more like fried potato nuggets, came in an ultra-fun serving container. It was almost as if they were lifted right from the fryer and placed on my plate. The fries did not disappoint. They were flavorful, crunchy, hot and salted perfectly.
